A new afternoon tea menu at a Suffolk hotel is launching in honour of a new Apple TV series set in East Anglia.

The Swan at Lavenham Hotel and Spa has announced a themed afternoon tea that celebrates the US 487th Bombardment Group who were stationed at Lavenham Airfield during the Second World War.

The group was part of East Anglia's friendly invasion by United States Air Force personnel, a story depicted in Masters of the Air, an Apple TV series airing on Friday, January 26.

The Swan's 487 Afternoon Tea: Episode One, named after the bomber boys, is a modern take on treats that might have been enjoyed during 1940s wartime Britain.

Diners can sample a ‘Wartime BLT’ on brown bread with corned beef, lettuce, tomato and Branston pickle and a lemony egg on white bread.

More traditional sandwich fillings include smoked salmon with cream cheese, and cucumber and dill.

Diners can choose between sweet or savoury options for the tea.

Those with a sweet tooth can sample a chocolate cake with a dash of beer, peanut butter macaroons and apple tart with a toffee apple.

Scones with clotted cream and jam are part of the sweet menu, whereas ham and prune, and cheese and chive scones are available as part of the savoury menu.

The rest of the savoury options include two potato-based dishes: King Ed’s biscuits and piccalilli and potato rarebit with brown sauce gel.

Two devilled quail eggs with caviar on a toasted brioche are also available as a nod to the airmen being given two eggs when they were flying instead of the rationed one egg.

Served from 12noon until 4pm from Monday to Saturday, and 2.30pm until 4pm on Sundays, the 487 Afternoon Tea: Episode One is priced at £27.50 per person.

Booking is essential at least 24 hours in advance.
