A SUDBURY student is hoping to leave her mobile phone and hair straighteners behind for a volunteering trip of a lifetime in the wilds of Borneo.
Olivia Anderson, 15, of Long Melford, has already organised cake stalls, car boot sales and quiz nights in a bid to hit the £3,500 target she needs for the excursion this August.
She will be part of a group of Sudbury Upper School students visiting the South-East Asian island – which is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world. The trip is being organised through Camps International.
If Olivia can raise the money, she will spend a month working on a diverse range of voluntary projects, including environmental, cultural and community work.
Olivia’s mother, Lindsay Anderson, said: “The trip was mentioned in a school assembly and Olivia came home and told me she wanted to do it. I think with young people getting so much bad press these days, it is really good she has chosen to do something like this and I am right behind her.
“It will be good for her to experience life without all the gadgets that teenagers rely on these days.”
So far, Olivia has raised £2,000 but she needs to find another £1,500 before May.
Mrs Anderson added: “We will be holding a garage sale at our home on February 26 and it would be great if some people could come forward with some possible venues for a quiz night or fashion show.”
