Butterfly Conservation and English Heritage want people to spot and record butterflies they see at the heritage charity’s castles as part of this year’s Big Butterfly Count.

The Big Butterfly Count, which runs until August 12, is the world’s biggest butterfly survey and results will help track the fortunes of UK butterflies.

Senior gardens adviser at English Heritage, Christopher Weddell, said: “The landscape around our castles and historic properties can offer a rich habitat for flora and fauna, and some butterflies seen by their historic inhabitants may still be enjoyed by visitors today.”

Potential suitable English Heritage sites in East Anglia include Framlingham Castle, Orford Castle and St Botolph’s Priory in Colchester.
