Husband and wife team Monty and Helen Atherton opened the doors of their shop Bespoke Blinds on Hall Street in Long Melford earlier this month.

The pair have decided to start their own business after years in the world of work. Helen has 27 years experience working in the curtain department of homeware store Glasswells, mostly in the Bury St Edmunds branch, while Monty has held numerous senior positions within companies and has run several businesses.

He said: “Helen has the specific expertise and I have lots of varied business experience, so we think that is a good combination.”

Monty said the pair have spent time decorating and kitting out the shop to give it a “boutique and contemporary ” feel.

Visitors will be able to see an extensive range of curtain fabrics, soft furnishings and blind designs including some of the latest motorised blinds that can be controlled remotely and from a smart phone.

“From my experience, half of customers know exactly what they want and the other half want you to advise them,” said Helen.

“I like nothing more than taking a range of samples to a customer’s home and helping them choose. And there is a lot of satisfaction when you see how pleased they are a month or so later when the curtains are in place.

“A well dressed window puts the finishing touch to a room.”

Helen says the shop is in a good location on Long Melford’s main thoroughfare and that they have had a lot of people drop in.

“We’ve had eight orders in the first eight days, which is a great start,” she added.
