People can now sign up for the Sudbury Memory Walk which is taking place later this year.

Last year 250 walkers of all ages stepped out in memory of families living with or having lost someone with dementia with just under £4,000 being raised.

Organised by Jerry Thatcher, aged 71, and his support team from South Suffolk Leisure, Care UK and Babergh District Council, it is being held on Saturday, October 6, starting and finishing at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, in the town’s Station Road.

The first walk will start at 11am with further walks planned to take place at staggered times .

You can sign up now at www.SudburyMemoryWalk2018.eventbrite.co.uk

There are four routes: half a mile, a mile, three miles and five miles all in aid of two local memory cafes: Decaf (part of the Bridge Project) in Sudbury and Ansell Memories Café in Hadleigh.

Both provide invaluable community resource for families living with dementia.

Jo Searle, chief executive of The Bridge Project, said: “The memory walk is a really good event – it raises people’s awareness of dementia and the services available, it’s also a very sociable event for everyone involved. For the Bridge Project the money raised is invaluable in ensuring that we can continue to offer a free service for people with dementia and their carers.”

Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, added: “We’re lucky in Babergh to have so many communities that understand the importance of becoming dementia friendly.

“This third Memory Walk is part of a concerted effort throughout the district to make those living with dementia feel more welcome and included; it definitely helps their carers, family and friends feel more supported too.

“Having taken part in last year’s walk I was delighted to hear it was returning and encourage anyone who can to take part. I’ll be putting my walking shoes on and joining in to support Decaf and Ansell Memories Café – I can’t wait to see everyone else out in support as well.”
