Regilding has finally taken place at St Peter’s Church in Sudbury as work to sustain the tower’s four clock faces continues.
The ongoing work to repair the four clocks has now gone on for several years.
Last October, after much wrangling, work began to prepare the clocks for painting and regilding and the hands were taken away over the Christmas period.
However, the numbers themselves could not be regilded until the temperature rose above 12°C.
Now, the recent warming in temperature has meant the work can be carried out.
For several years, the clocks ran out of sync and all showed different times. Most recently only two had the correct time, while the others had stopped completely. The chimes sometimes rang 13 times instead of 12.
Sudbury Town Council’s finance committee opted last year to repair the clock faces as cost-effectively as possible, splitting the bill with the Friends of St Peter’s.
