FIVE students from a school in west Suffolk have been chosen to take part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics.
The quintet, who are either current or former pupils of Sudbury Upper School, were picked after attending auditions in London. All five studied performing arts at the school and are now preparing to take their place among the 10,000 volunteers who will appear in the high-profile extravaganza.
Year 13 student Chris Badrick is due to appear in the closing ceremony along with former student Josephine Chapman, while ex-pupils Jaclyn Taylor, Alexandra Ewing and Serena Grant will all perform in the opening ceremony on July 27 – an event that is expected to be viewed by four billon people worldwide.
The students have been sworn to secrecy about the details of the ceremony but have all been measured for hats and gloves, and expect to be rehearsing three days a week as the start date looms.
The ceremonies are reported to be costing a combined total of £81million and will be directed by Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire.
Last week, Mr Boyle revealed the opening ceremony has been given the title ‘Isles of Wonder’ and will be based on passages from Shakespeare play, The Tempest.
Head of creative arts at Sudbury Upper School, Lesley Turner, said: “We are delighted to have played a small part in London 2012 Olympics. We’re very proud of the students who have taken the opportunity of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
