More schools in the region - mainly in Essex - have been affected by the snow and ice, with dozens remaining closed for the day,

Across Essex, more than 50 schools will be shut today, all of them citing adverse weather as the cause.

In Suffolk, Hillside Special School in Sudbury has been the only confirmed closure.

However, several schools, including Bildeston and Whatfield primary schools near Hadleigh and Sproughton and Dale Hall primary schools in the Ipswich area, said they would he holding extended registration to allow pupils to arrive safely.

Kesgrave High School, which was closed yesterday due to boiler problems, confirmed last night it would be opening today.

Essex schools to close include Messing Primary School near Tiptree, which said: “Already treacherous site conditions and well below freezing forecast for the day will make driving on country roads potentially very dangerous for the school community.”

The closures come after snowfall over the weekend caused widespread disruption, with roads and rail lines across the country affected.

Many schools remained closed or shut early.

Last night, more snow fell in parts of the region, while freezing temperatures caused treacherous driving conditions.

Weatherquest, the Norwich-based weather forecasters, said there was a risk of widespread ice this morning.

“Wintry showers in Norfolk and NE Suffolk will ease this morning, leaving most places dry with hazy sunshine, but feeling cold,” it added.

“Light to moderate southwesterly winds. Max temps 0C to 4C.”

Suffolk police said this morning that there had been few accidents overnight as motorists appeared to have heeded warnings to take care.
