A man has died and a teenager flown to hospital in a critical condition after a serious crash in Braintree.

The crash happened on the A131 at the junction with Grove Orchard shortly before 8am today.

A motorcyclist, a man in his 40s, was declared dead the scene.

A schoolgirl, aged 16, has been flown to the Royal London Hospital with serious injuries and her condition is described as critical.

The driver of a blue Toyota Corolla also involved in the crash was uninjured.

The road has been closed whilst emergency services deal with the incident but officers hope it will re-open soon.

Motorists are advised to take alternative routes.

Officers from Essex Police’s Serious Collision Unit would like to speak to any witnesses, especially those who may have seen the motorcycle before the collision. It was travelling on the road from Braintree towards Halstead.

It is the latest in a series of tragedies on the roads of Essex this month.

Three people died on a crash in Gosfield Road, Braintree, on December 7, while a 95-year-old man was killed in a crash in Kirby Cross on Friday evening.

Another man died in a multi-vehicle smash on the M25 earlier in the month, while a woman escaped with only serious injuries after her car ended up under a lorry in a collision on the A120.
