AFC Sudbury boss says his team can still avoid Ryman Premier relegation

AFC Sudbury boss Jamie Godbold still believes his side can avoid relegation.

Jamie Godbold won’t give up on his AFC Sudbury side, even though the Ryman Premier Division strugglers could be relegated over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Second from bottom in the table on 44 points – with three games remaining – victories are imperative for the Yellows, the west Suffolk side are four points from safety but with a far inferior goal difference compared to the sides they are trying to catch.

On Saturday, Sudbury go to play-off chasing Tonbridge Angels, before hosting fellow top-five hopefuls Needham Market, who are just a point off the play-off places in eighth, 48 hours later.

Their relegation back to Ryman North will be sealed at Tonbridge, should they lose and Kingstonian, Leatherhead, Folkestone Invicta and Burgess Hill Town all win, but Godbold’s mindset is anything but negative.

“Anyone can beat anyone in this league,” said the AFC manager, after Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to impressive league leaders Bognor Regis Town.

“On our day we can beat anyone and we just need a bit of luck and someone to score a goal which we can then defend.

“We will keep believing, we have to, and there were positives to come out of Saturday’s game.

“The two young lads, Ollie Dunlop, who made his home debut, and Mekhi McKenzie, who made his debut off the bench, did well.

“We managed to open up a team at the top of the league several times and individually we kept working, we had 10 men and the lads worked their socks off.

“Hopefully, next time we will have 11 men still on the pitch and we can put our chances away.”

Godbold’s side slumped to their 23rd defeat of the season at the Wardale Williams Stadium at the weekend, and their eighth loss in 10 games, their task made all the more difficult following skipper James Baker’s early dismissal for a professional foul.

Asked if his side would take a lot of “picking up” following the morale-sapping defeat, the former Kirkley & Pakefield manager quipped: “Not really,. they are used to losing games, they have been doing it all year!

“We will have two good training sessions this week to work on things and we will keep fighting.

“I have belief in the team and they have to have belief in themselves.”
