‘I’ve been here over four years because I’ve done a good job’ – Mick McCarthy

Mick McCarthy says his managerial record is the reason for his longevity at Portman Road, not owner Marcus Evans’ perceived patience with his managers.

The Blues boss is enduring a tough campaign this time round, Town dropping to 17th in the Championship – five points off the bottom-three with eight games to go – following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at mid-table Cardiff City.

However, working on a much smaller budget than most of his rivals during his time in Suffolk, McCarthy has arguably punched above his weight as manager for the most part – the pinnacle being a play-off semi-final appearance in the 2014-2015.

Appointed when Town were bottom of the league, in November 2012, McCarthy has outlasted 88 managers in the Championship – Derby’s Steve McClaren (for a second time), Norwich’s Alex Neil and Wigan’s Warren Joyce receiving their P45s in the last fortnight.

Asked if he was fortunate to work under Evans, who is not considered particularly trigger-happy, McCarthy said: “No, not really.

“It confirms to me that for four years I have done a really good job here and this year has been tough.

“We have not spent Aston Villa money, we haven’t spent Norwich money, we haven’t spent vast sums, and we have been competitive every season, up until this one.

“It does not make me feel lucky, I have got a really good relationship with Marcus, it just confirms that I have been good at my job but I am having it tough this year.”

On the latest sackings, he added: “Steve McClaren, I thought, was brought in because he played the “Derby Way”.

“He started off on fire, got six wins on the bounce and looked like he was going to get them in the play-offs, so that was a bit of a shock.

“Warren Joyce, he didn’t inherit great things and it’s been tough for him. (Alex Neil) having been promoted and done a great job and everybody thinking he was great – 12-18 months on he is out of work again.”

McCarthy celebrated 25 years as a manager on Saturday, and revealed: “I am always sad to see it (managerial sackings) but on the other side of that, if managers didn’t go, the ones who are out of work would never get a job.

“There has been something like 80 or 90 (managers) gone since I’ve been here and I can hear a lot of them (Ipswich fans) screaming at the radio saying I shouldn’t be here, but hey-ho.”

  • Spot on, Colonel Chester but as with everything associated with modern day football one gets rewarded for failure.

  • You've been here 4 years because your willingness to let the owner sell our best players and not replace them was rewarded with a long contract and even if Evans wanted to get rid of you he would have to put his hand in his pocket and he won't. You managed to galvanise the players to avoid relegation when you arrived but ever since then every supporter and footballer that I know agrees the the recruitment and selection of players has been mystifyingly poor and the playing strategy looks out of the ark. Nearly every other championship team looks on playing Ipswich as points in the bag, and their benches all contain three or more players who would walk into our first team. It should not be that way and after 4 years there is no-one else to blame but the management team. You're an arrogant dinosaur who treats the fans with contempt, you can hardly be blamed if they now all turn on you. I have never seen this at ITFC before in over 50 years, no-one else has ever got such a huge percentage of the fans to actively dislike them. Well done, you must be ever so proud of just how far you've managed to string this out with bluster and rude one liners.

  • Yes you saved us from relegation when you first came here and yes you got us in the play offs on f### all so I thank you for that , BUT .... if it wasnt for BART and a loanie Lawrence we would be relegated already , your tactics and player selections for this season have been an absolute joke , but I do believe the worst t### of them all is that USLESS excuse of an owner we have here , the investment into our football club has been a disgrace and if fans our stupid enough to 're new their season tickets without this pathetic owner investing first our mad .. but it's your choice and I respect you all for your loyality, but your loyality will destroy our club ... Mr Evan please invest in this great club give the fans their pride back and let's move forward or sell and f### off .....

  • It is sad that these McCarthy articles are constantly repeated. Hey Ho. How do can you make very average footballers play better if they do not have the engine, passion, confidence and skill to do so ? Why are the coaching staff wasting time when there has been no marked improvement ? Why are we playing so defensively chasing shadows and scoring few goals ? Why have we persevered with the same players who can not win their positional battles which results in more defending ? Simple answer MM, you can not get any more out of these players who have let the club down every week. The FA Cup exit proved that. You draft in more cheap signings hoping they can. McCarthy should of been more proactive in his 4 year wonderful reign in getting the team to play attacking football but sat there stuck in a rut, sticking with his favourites who could not do it on the pitch. Now the club wants more money off fewer supporters ?

  • It's time for "Sir" Mick to be honoured with a plastic statue of him kissing the feet of Sir Bobby or Alf.I suggest at the next home game with 15000 fans (many of those who are invisible) that a small collection box is passed around with a suggestion of a maximum contribution of 10p is donated. We may need to raise more later for the extra plastic for Mick's egotistical head.

  • Well McCarthy it's interesting isn't it, that all of those managers that have been sacked that you have spoken about, have all drastically outperformed you. Their record clearly shows that, yet they were still sacked. The main difference between them and you is 1. They are obviously better managers than you and 2. They are not working for an owner who doese'nt want to spend and who has a manager who is perfectly happy with that, as long as he's being rewarded with a nice fat pay packet. When someone tells people how good that they are, it usually means that they are trying to cover up their failings and shortcomings, just who do you think that you are talking to, when you spout such bull...t?

  • Everybody changing mangers below us in the table because a new manger can bring new ideas of how to play look at the teams below us that have done that this week. But at the moment at the top man dont want to change it so we just get by playing the same football every week. If we dont be careful it will bite us on the bum we need too get the attacking urgency to the team before its too late and we cant get out of trouble. Thats why we see all these clubs changing there manger because they dont want to be left behind and fighting for relegation.

  • considering the real reason you're still here Bottom Six Mick, is we can't afford to sack you. and you'll still be here next because "you've really done a good job" 16th, one win in 13 and crowds down 5000 who can argue with that? won't win another game this season, we will stay up but in the bottom six, and he'll still be here in 3 years because he's a proper bloke and different class.....

  • You know what they say Micky me boy self praise is no recommendation and as Evans haven't got very high ideals or much knowledge about football and as you have no regard for the fans I just wonder how much longer you will last at any other club you would have been long gone by now
