A community leader has expressed her sadness after hearing one of Suffolk's biggest fireworks displays will not be taking place this year.

Organisers of the Big Night Out in Long Melford have revealed that due to "financial pressures" the event will not take place this year

Since starting more than 50 years ago the event has raised around £800,000 for local charities.

Elisabeth Malvisi, chair of Long Melford Parish Council, said: "It's a loss for the village and it is a big loss for everyone.

"It's an iconic event and it's very, very sad and I am sure at some stage I will be getting together with my other co-councillors to discuss it."

Ms Malvisi said she hopes the event can return in the future.

"It's a loss to children who hoped to be going and parents who hoped to be taking children, the charities and Project Seven themselves," she said.

Speaking about the village losing out on a lot of passing trade during the Big Night Out weekend, the council chair said she is sure the village will bounce back.

"Long Melford is a vibrant community and village and we don't let obstacles faze us, we will find away," she said.

A spokesman for Project Seven , who organises the event, said: "It is with regret that Project Seven must announce that there will not be a Big Night Out in 2024, due to financial pressures and other demands put on to us.

"The only way we can continue is by obtaining sponsorship.

"We will continue supporting local events with our food unit and are also actively looking for other events to expand this side of our fundraising.

"We rely on volunteers and are also seeking more willing hands to help at these events, and if you can help in any way, please get in touch with a committee member."
