A study is underway to see whether a crossing could be installed on a stretch of road where a teenager was hurt in an accident on her way to school last year.

Bibi Anderson-Jones, 13, of Ridgewell, was walking in Cavendish Road, Clare, on her way to Stour Valley Community School on Monday, June 12, when she was involved in an accident with a car as she crossed the 30mph road.

Onlookers described her being "thrown in the air" and she suffered minor injuries and, at the time, Bibi's mum Amanda Anderson called for further safety measures to be introduced.

Now, Cllr Bobby Bennett, who represents Clare on Suffolk County Council, has funded a study to determine if a crossing for the road would be possible.

She said: "Following the accident in this location last year, I have been in touch with the family involved, the school, Suffolk Police and Suffolk Highways to look at ways in which we help keep children safe on their way to school.

"Further to these discussions, I funded a feasibility study to find out whether it would be possible to put a crossing on Cavendish Road and whether or not this would improve the route to school.

"The evidence for that report has now been gathered and the report is in the process of being written and published to determine if a crossing is feasible.

"Depending on the outcome of the report, next steps will need to be considered by myself and the local community.

"There is no budget available for schemes such as this, so funding would need to be found externally," she added.

In June last year, Ms Anderson told the East Anglian Daily Times: "I think a crossing or a reduced speed limit or some sleeping policemen is definitely needed there.

"I think that the road is a severe accident waiting to happen. Someone should not have to be seriously hurt or to die for changes to be made."
