An investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed a workshop building in west Suffolk is under way.

Firefighters were called to Hurdle Drove in West Row, near Mildenhall, at about 11.45am on Wednesday and spent 12 hours at the scene.

In an update at 3pm, nine appliances were battling the blaze.

Over the course of the incident, some 22 appliances attended the scene.

The fire was in a 40 by 10 metre workshop and flames were spreading to an adjacent building.

The workshop contained acetylene cylinders and other materials, including cleaning materials.

The firefighting operation was scaled back to four appliances and a water carrier at 5.15pm last night, and the incident was closed at 11.52pm.

A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said crews will be going back to reinspect the site on Thursday morning and the cause of the fire is still being looked into.

The road was closed by police while emergency services dealt with the incident, with drivers advised to avoid the area.

Thick black smoke could be seen rising into the air in the surrounding area.
