Mark Reynolds, 47, will battle Lloyd Otte for the vacant EBO English light-welterweight title on March 11 at Clacton Town Hall.

The fight will be his first since he returned from the pro game back in 2001, after a six-year professional career and 18 years as an amateur.

He hung up his gloves with a record of 18 fights, nine wins, five losses and four draws as a flyweight, having fought for both the British and WBC international titles, and held the Southern Area strap for five years.

“I just got too old and found it too hard,” said Reynolds, who lives in Sudbury with his wife Lorna, when explaining his decison to retire. “But I’ve got my second wind now!”

The unlikely ring comeback is a result of Reynolds’ foray into coaching a team of white-collar boxers at the Zest Gym in Sudbury.

“I’ve been training some young boys for white-collar boxing and taking them in the corner,” he explained. “They kept trying to get me back into the ring and they have finally done it!

“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been sparring and getting the roadwork in, doing five miles a day, six days a week.

“Lorna thinks I’m mad! She’s totally behind me, but she doesn’t want to come and watch.

“I’ve been sparring with the boys and got the bit back between my teeth and I just want to have a go - if you win and defend the belt twice you get to keep it, so that’s what I’m aiming for.

“I’ve got more experience and I’m not worried about my opponent, even if he is younger and the fight is in his back yard. I’ve seen his fights and I know I can handle him.”

Paul Botterill, one of Reynolds’ stable, is fighting for a heavyweight belt on the same show.
