The informal community picnic will take place from 12 noon as part of Field's In Trust's 'Have a Field Day' scheme, which champions green spaces and parks, helping to ensure they are saved for community use and fully appreciated and enjoyed.

Campaigners are currently fighting for Belle Vue Park to be preserved as it faces plans for a hotel, restaurant and car park on part of the site.

Bug spotting cards with bug viewers along with tree identification cards will be provided for youngsters to help them really appreciate the nature around them within their local town park.

Ellen Murphy, Sudbury Town Councillor, said: "I was lucky enough to be born in the country. I had freedom, time to be a child and to enjoy nature.

"However, unless we protect the open spaces we have, our children and future generations will miss out on what myself and others took for granted."

The 'Belle Vue Park; Rescue, Restore and Revive' campaign, which was formed to work alongside the 'Sudbury People Against a Hotel Built on or in Front of Belle Vue Park' Facebook group, brings together members of the community from Sudbury and the surrounding area to fight against any major commercial development on the site.

The group says it is not against modernisation or progression for Sudbury, but wishes to retain all current community space and celebrate local heritage for future generations.

It is also hoped that the park, community space and house will be restored and facilities improved so that Belle Vue Park will eventually become a real attraction to draw people into Sudbury.
