A Suffolk man accused of raping a teenager in Sudbury after grabbing her from behind and pushing her to the ground will be sentenced in the next few weeks after admitting the attack.

Before Ipswich Crown Court today was Marian Pavel, 28, of Cavendish Way, Sudbury, who pleaded guilty to raping the woman on May 28 and an offence of assault by penetration.

Sentence was adjourned until a date to be fixed after July 18 to allow an impact statement to be taken from the victim and to give her the opportunity to attend the sentencing hearing.

Pavel was arrested after an 18-year-old woman reported being raped near an area of grassland, between First Avenue and Second Avenue, at about 3.30am on bank holiday Monday, May 28.

At an earlier hearing before magistrates in Ipswich, prosecutor Colette Harper said the victim had been walking from Sudbury town centre when she was grabbed from behind and pushed to the ground, before being sexually assaulted and raped.

Pavel, who entered his guilty pleas through a Romanian interpreter, was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register.

He was remanded in custody.
